# What Hyperspell installs on your machine

> Every file and setting the Hyperspell command line tool manages, what each is for, and how to turn it off or remove it.

Run this to see everything the [command line tool](https://docs.hyperspell.com/agents/cli.md) manages on your machine, with each path and whether it is in place:

```bash theme={null}
hyperspell status
```

Pipe it (`hyperspell status | jq .surfaces`) to get the same list as JSON. The tool never touches anything outside this list.

## What is installed

| Name in `status` | Where | What it is for | Used by |
| - | - | - | - |
| Autostart | macOS: `~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.hyperspell.sync.plist`. Linux: `~/.config/systemd/user/hyperspell-sync.service`, or a cron entry | Starts the background sync tool at login | The sync tool |
| hyperbrain CLI | `~/.local/bin/hyperbrain` | The query tool: ask the brain, search it, save a note | You, and any agent that can run commands |
| MCP: Claude Desktop | Claude Desktop's `claude_desktop_config.json` | Gives Claude Desktop the brain's tools | Claude Desktop |
| MCP: Claude Code | `~/.claude.json` | Gives Claude Code the brain's tools | Claude Code |
| MCP: Codex | `~/.codex/config.toml` | Gives Codex the brain's tools | Codex |
| Codex AGENTS.md block | `~/.codex/AGENTS.md` | A short note telling Codex when to consult the brain | Codex |
| Cursor rules block | `~/.cursorrules` | A short note telling Cursor when to consult the brain | Cursor |
| Skill: hyperspell-brain | `~/.claude/skills/hyperspell-brain` | Teaches Claude Code when and how to query the brain | Claude Code |
| Plugin: hyperspell-activity | `~/.claude/skills/hyperspell-activity` | Optional. Records and hands off your coding sessions. Only installed if you opted in | Claude Code |
| Daemon log (stdout, stderr) | `~/.hyperspell/logs/sync.log`, `sync.err` | What the sync tool did, with timestamps. Each file is capped at about 5 MB | You, when troubleshooting |

The tool also keeps your login and settings in `~/.hyperspell/` (readable only by you).

Older versions added a block to `~/.claude/CLAUDE.md`. The tool no longer does, and removes the block it wrote. `hyperspell status` shows this as `CLAUDE.md block (retired)`.

## Turn something off

| To stop | Run |
| - | - |
| Session recording and handoff | `hyperspell activity off` |
| Everything, but keep the query tool | `hyperspell uninstall --keep-cli` |
| Everything | `hyperspell uninstall` |
| Everything, plus your login, settings and logs | `hyperspell uninstall --purge` |

`hyperspell uninstall` removes autostart, the MCP entries, the note blocks, the skill and the plugin, and uninstalls `hyperbrain`. Only the entries Hyperspell wrote are removed; the rest of each file is left as it was. Run `hyperspell status` afterwards to confirm nothing is left.
